An investigation of potassium nitrate and sucrose solid propellant, made in 2001 by Indonesian scientists and engineers.  Experiments were made using press-molded grains, and tested in a standard BATES-type motor. 

The document provides critical pressure index and pressure exponent data, as well as specific impulse, burning rate, and other key information about "candy" propellants.  You will find both theoretical and experimental performance results.

"Candy" propellants, using only the commonly and readily-available ingredients potassium nitrate (saltpeter, KNO3) and sugar (sucrose) are easy to make, inexpensive, and relatively safe.   This kind of propellant gives reasonably good performance in small-scale rocket motors, burns very fast, and is widely used by "amateur" experimenters worldwide.

This hard-to-find report offers essential information about physical and chemical properties, stoichiometric ratios, hazards, toxicity (very little), and theoretical calculations.  The several illustrations include a scanning electron microscope photo of the propellant surface.

The report explains the static test setup used, including diagrams of data capture.  The propellant formula (mixing ratio for oxidizer and fuel) is also here, along with thrust curves from the tests.
